MedSafe Safe Medication Disposal

About the program

The MedSafe Safe Medication Disposal program is a partnership between Engage Douglas County and local pharmacies, to provide our community safer options for medication disposal, as well as information regarding prescription overdoses.

Why does this program exist?

Prescription drug overdose death rates have quadrupled between the ages of 12-25 in Kansas over the past 12 years. It is important for Douglas County residents to do their part to prevent accidental poisonings.

  • Safe Use: Only take medications prescribed to you, read labels, and follow all directions carefully.

  • Safe Storage: Keep medications in a secure location, monitor them, and never share prescription medications.

  • Safe Disposal: Get rid of all unused or expired medications by taking them to a local medication disposal drop box, take-back event, follow FDA guidelines, or use medication disposal products.

If a medicine was not taken as directed, or if too much medicine was taken by accident, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
